Why a Scissor Cut Still Beats the Clippers

I've been cutting hair for 36 years, and if there's one thing I still believe more than anything, it's this: scissors give you a better haircut than clippers ever will. Not a faster one. Not a lower-maintenance one. A better one.

Clippers work off a guard — a fixed number, the same length everywhere the blade touches. Scissors let me read your head as I go. Every skull is shaped a little differently, every hairline sits a little differently, and a scissor cut lets me adjust for that in real time instead of forcing your hair into a uniform length it was never meant to be.

That's part of why a scissor cut grows out so much better. Clipper cuts tend to lose their shape fast — you start seeing the guard lines blur within a couple weeks. A scissor cut, done right, keeps its shape and blends naturally as it grows, which means more time between visits and less chance of that "just got a haircut" look the day after.

None of this means clippers don't have their place — for a clean fade or a tight taper, they're the right tool. But for the overall shape of a cut, for beard work, for anything that needs to look intentional rather than uniform, scissors are still the craft. It's slower. It takes more skill. And it's worth every extra minute.
